Loves books and cats

Best things in life: books, beaches, cats, chocolate, sunsets, sleep

The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett I always feel bad if I don’t like a classic. Obviously many people have thought over the years that this is a wonderful children’s book. And maybe if I read this as a child I would have loved it, but as an adult I found too many aspects of the novel irritating and silly: Colin’s total control over every person in the household in the absence of his father; Dickon’s command of animal language; the rapturous expressions over the outdoors that Mary and Colin were always using, the stupidity of the adults in general since everyone was fooled by Colin during his recovery. I’ve liked many children’s books that I’ve read since my childhood, but I just can’t count this as one.
